Southern Wells Receives $10,000 STEM Grant from AT&T

encouraging boys and girls to pursue employment in engineering and technology.

“It’s wonderful to see the foundation and AT&T supporting a program that introduces all sorts of new possibilities to kids in our community,” said State Sen. Travis Holdman. “We all share the same goal of doing our part to ensure stable, healthy and successful futures for our students.”

Using the LEGO MINDSTORMS concept, students will be immersed in a comprehensive eLearning program, providing new opportunities for academic achievement in STEM areas. Middle schoolers will be responsible for creating hands-on ball and joint replacements and will utilize a 3D printer and 3D printer kits to create materials for in-class construction.

“This is an empowering program that will go a long way toward helping diversify our local economy,” said The Wells County Foundation CEO Tammy Slater. “We’re so appreciative that AT&T recognizes the value of investing in kids and exploring their career goals.”

“Corporate support like this helps us open the eyes of young people, who may not know that they are a good fit for STEM jobs,” said Southern Wells Community Schools Supt. Steve Darnell. “It’s programs like these that promote the growth and success of our rural families.”

AT&T’s signature philanthropic initiative, AT&T Aspire drives innovation in education – through technology, social innovation and relationships – to ensure all students have the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond.

“Education is the best investment we can make to ensure our new hires start day one with the skills they need,” said AT&T Indiana Director of Government Affairs Steve Rogers.  “Through AT&T Aspire, we aim to help all students make their biggest dreams a reality.”
